Space Harrier VGL Release 4
Programmed by Roderick "HotrodX" Rivero
Based on the games originally made by SEGA

Space Harrier VGL is a remake of Space Harrier II that
appeared on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis. It also uses some
elements from the original Space Harrier for the arcade.
This game is more of a "remix" of both.

This game is an entry to the Retro Remakes Summer 2003
Competition, where it placed 18th. Check out the other
entries at www.remakes.org. Please support Retrogaming.

This game is written in Visual Basic 6, using
Videogame Layer (VGL).

Extract the zip contents to a folder. Run <setup.exe> and
click "Register VGL". This will copy the vgl.dll library
to the system folder and register it. You *may* need
Administrator rights to do this.

If you have installed an earlier version of VGL, the setup
program will overwrite it with Version 1.3. IT IS IMPORTANT
THAT YOU INSTALL VGL VERSION 1.3 OR LATER FOR THE GAME TO
RUN.

After setup, you may now run the game by clicking the file
<harrier.exe>. This will open up the program launcher. Move
the mouse to the buttons to show a brief description of
them.

Using the default keys, the direction keys are used to
move the character. Pressing and holding Z fires the
blaster. Pressing ESC quits the game (during in-game) and
the program (when on the title screen). Press Enter to
pause the game.

You may change the keyboard controls on the program
launcher screen. Click on the <Remap Keys> button to
access the Key Remap screen. Take care not to use some
in-game toggle keys.

You may also use a gamepad. The game is designed for
digital input, so analog Joysticks are not recommended
since it does not track analog movements.

Press F2 to toggle VSync (if Alternate Render mode is on).
Press F3 to toggle Frameskipping. Press F4 to toggle
High-Res sprites.

Hints:

* Keep moving. Enemies lock on your current position.
When you hear the enemies' weapon move to a different
place.

* Look for "sweet spots". Sweet spots are certain
positions on screen that can wipe out a whole enemy
wave without them being able to fire back.

* Most waves come in pairs. So if you see a wave of
ships come out, expect the same from the other side.

[] - Issues - []
[] []
[][][][][][][][]

Known Issues:

* As much as possible, use the Default render method.
While the Alternate render mode uses Video RAM
(thus faster), surface memory is lost if the
application loses focus (say, by task-switching).

* Some old OS may not have an updated WAVE decoders.
The music in this game are *.wav files that are
encoded in MP3 format. The possible solutions are:

1. Download the MP3 for Wave codec from
http://www.iis.fhg.de/audio.

2. Check for system updates.

* Text may be garbled on systems with unusual custom
font DPI setting.

* Some flickering sprites may not be visible with
frameskipping on using slow video cards. VGL does
not use alpha transparency. To fake transparencies,
VGL renders a sprite every other cycle. It is
possible that the frame skipped is the rendering
cycle.

[] - About VGL - []
[] []
[][][][][][][][][][]

VGL, or Videogame Layer, is a high-level API that further
simplifies DirectX tasks for 2D graphics, Wave and MIDI
audio, and Keyboard/Mouse/Joysticks inputs. It was made
with Visual Basic 6 in mind, but since it's an ActiveX
DLL, any other ActiveX capable language can use it. For
more information visit www.angelfire.com/games4/hotrodx.
