Welcome to eXoDOS Version 2.0!

eXoDOS is my attempt to catalogue, obtain, and make playable every game developed for the DOS and PC Booter platform. I strive to find original media rather than using scene rips. This collection uses a combination of Dosbox and ScummVM to play these older titles on modern systems. All required emulators are included in the torrent and have been setup to run all included titles with no prior knowledge or experience required on the users part.

Version 2.0 adds a ton of new features to the collection. Several utilities, converters, and even a compressor have been added. Check the section on new features for the complete documentation of them.

MEAGRE now also features a unique GUI dubbed 'Nostalgia Mode.' Check the drop down menu to enable it.

This pack includes 326 DOS games which are in some form or another part of the RPG Genre. I have defined "RPG" as games which primarily rely on levelling up one or many characters through a combination of experience, items, or abilities. This includes both action and turn-based RPG's.

All games have been pre-setup and are immediately playable, no configuration required. A one time setup is required by the front end.

The games included were identified by scanning several adventure game archives, dos collections, and auditing well known game databases such as MobyGames.

Updates to 2.0:
Apart from new games and fixes, version 2.0 adds several new features. Within MEAGRE, one can now browse via "Nostalgia Mode", which allows one to browse the games from a graphical perspective (See Sec03 for documentation).

Prior to versions 2.0, any game supported by ScummVM was automatically launched by ScummVM. Version 2.0 allows the user to select which emulator they would like to run for games that are supported by both programs.

Another addition is the ability to install a game from the launch file. Previously when attempting to launch a game that had not been installed, the program would simply remind you the game had not been installed yet. Now it goes on to ask if you would like to install the game, negating the need to run the install file seperately.

In the Bonus directory you can find the following apps:

eXoCrunch - Compression software
DBGL 077b + Converter - Conversion software for use with Dosbox game Launcher

A list of all new games can be found in the games list.

Below you will find a list of all 326 games in this collection. However, before that I'd like to highlight the series included which defined the DOS RPG era.

Highlighted Series
(In No Particular Order)

Fallout (The Wasteland Universe)

The Fallout series is fairly well known these days with Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas bringing the games to today's modern consoles. It all started back on DOS thought with Fallout 1. Wasteland first outlined the world that Fountain of Dreams (unofficial Wasteland sequel) and Fallout populate, although due to the fact the games came from different publishers, Fallout had to be called a 'spiritual successor" rather than a sequel.

These games explore the world after a nuclear apocalypse. Fallout was notable for its many ways of solving problems depending on the characters stats. Brute force, charisma, bartering, hacking, or tactical ops are all possible approaches. Play the game with a dumb character and you will have very different conversations than playing through the game with an intelligent character.

Unfortunately Fallout 2 was released for windows only, and therefor doesn't make an appearance here.

Ultima series

Richard Garriott's Ultima universe was first published by Sierra On-line for the PC, before being self published by Garriott's own Origin Systems. The Ultima games revolve around Garriott's alter-ego, Lord British. The player takes on the role of The Stranger\Avatar (depending on the game), a human from earth called upon by British to assist protecting this fantasy world.

The games are often dungeon crawls, but initially were known for providing a graphical interface when most games of the time were still text based. While ground breaking at it's initial release, later versions did not fare as well as comparable RPG's of the time.

Elder Scrolls series

Another series that is still going strong is the Bethesda developed Elder Scrolls series. One of the stronger first entries into the first person RPG genre, Elder Scrolls Arena allowed users to travel over the entire game world rather than restricting players to key locations or map travel. This has become an expected part of the Elder Scrolls series, with the newer games boasting some of the largest open worlds ever developed.

Dagerfall introduced a larger NPC system with politcal parties and guilds, while character development revolves around building up skills through usage rather than a point system.

Legend of the Red Dragon - BBS Door Games

I included this category as I consider these to be the precursor to the modern day MMORPG, and I have a soft spot for nostalgia. Honestly, they are just as much a precursor to Farmville as well... Sysops of BBS systems (we are talking pre-net here guys) often looked for ways to keep people dialing in. What better way than to encourage all your users to kill the horrible red Dragon in LORD. Flirting in the bar, user battles, random encounters, and cool swag - all in 15 turns a day. Once your turns were up, you had to wait until midnight to adventure again, so it wasn't uncommon to have a LORD characters on multiple BBS's. But what happened when you had already played all 10 characters? Well, for me, that is when I started testing out all the other door games. Offworld mutants, fishing, pimp wars, trivia; there were all types. But the best were always the RPG games. While the versions here won't have random people from all over your area code dialing in, you can at least see what the game was like. LORD fans have kept the game alive, and you can still find games going on the web.

The eXoDos collection can be run from any directory, as all launch files are designed to use relative paths to each other. The front-end however does require knowledge of what directory it is sitting in. Simply running the "Setup eXoDOS.bat" file will automatically setup eXoDOS to run from your current directory.

This file also decompresses the GamesADV.zip file, which contains all of the manuals, art, and game information for each title. This will take some time to decompress as it is approx. 1gb in size.

If you have other eXoDOS packs, the Setup eXoDOS.bat file will also decompress their front end assets. All volumes use the same setup file. It works with any combination of the packs.

Suggestions for those updating:
  • Point this torrent to the old directory and let it over write the old files. Doing this should start you around 88%
  • Delete the exodos\games\games\ directory and rerun the 'Setup eXoDOS.bat' file. This ensures old crap I removed doesn't linger.
  • It is safe to download this to the same folder as other exodos torrents, however you may have to disable a few shared files such as the meagre.ini file. I plan to fix this in the next release.

See the included documentation for more information.

Games include manuals, quick reference cards, and any other scanned materials when available. Also, clicking on any of the information in the game header (designer, developer, publisher, year, etc...) will filter the list by that field. Do you like Post-Apocalyptic games? Simply click the genre and the list will filter down.

New packs plug in, and work with the same filters. Adding the other collections enables genre sorting, and sub-genre sorting across game types.
